Our Students
Hopewell Avenue Public School is home to over 850 students from Junior Kindergarten to grade 8. The majority of our students live in Old Ottawa South, Ottawa East, the Glebe and Centertown. Upon graduation from grade 8, our students attend Glebe Collegiate, Canterbury High School or Lisgar Collegiate for their secondary education.
Our Staff
Our staff includes more than 60 teachers, a principal, 1 full-time vice principal, 2.5 office support staff, 3.5 educational assistants, 6 early childhood educators, 1.5 LST and 1 LRT, a library technician, and custodial staff. We are supported centrally by a Board psychologist, a speech and language pathologist, and a social worker.
The Hopewell staff nurtures the development of healthy lifestyles, positive decision making, environmental awareness, and character education. Our staff is dedicated to excellence in the classroom and demonstrates a strong commitment to extra-curricular activities and programming for students. Our staff is a combination of experienced teachers and those who have recently joined the profession. These dedicated teachers are committed to personal professional development and many have specialist qualifications and/or Master’s Degree.
Our Community
Parents and community members are highly valued partners in the education process. We encourage their involvement through extra-curricular activities, business partnerships and activities in our School Council.
The Hopewell Community is rich in resources and facilities. The Glebe Parents’ Day Care operates in the school with a school-aged program, particularly for kindergarten students when they are not attending classes. A number of other excellent agencies offer after school care, including the Ottawa South Community Association. Other community facilities include Brewer Pool and Arena and the Old Ottawa South Library.
The International Languages Program, offered through Continuing Education, operates a large program on Saturdays, and in the summer. The proximity of Glebe Collegiate, the National Arts Centre, and the museums means our students are frequently involved in special presentations and superb programs.
The natural areas, including the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal, make exciting settings for outdoor activities such as cross-country running, skating or outdoor education.
Mission Statement
Academic accomplishment, respect for self and others, and the skills to be a life-long learner are essential outcomes at Hopewell Avenue Public School.
