It all started when the School Council's Diversity Committee realized that Hopewell should do something to let all students, of all backgrounds and ethnicities, know that they are welcomed and celebrated at Hopewell. After talking with the Principal and VP, who then spoke to the teachers, it was decided the best thing to do is create a student-driven, teacher-mentored, work of art to greet all who enter the front doors. This Welcome Art Mural will reflect how Hopewell students feel about their learning space and how best to let all students know Hopewell welcomes all forms of diversity and culture.

Hopewell is lucky to have the amazingly talented Natalie Johnston for a few years (who came from Canterbury High School's art department on a teacher exchange program) who is leading the project and she has been working closely with the teaching staff to gather many pieces of art to be considered for the mural. The art has been gathered and they are now entering the judging phase to decide what will be displayed on the mural. Natalie expects to have the mural completed by June. It's a long process but will be well worth the wait because the end result will be stunning! We are so very happy this is in the works and we want to send a HUGE thank you to Natalie, and all the teachers and children who have worked hard to submit their pieces of art. Also, thank you to the City of Ottawa for providing some funding for art supplies. ☺️ We are excited to see the mural on the wall!

We have something else exciting to tell you about (ok, just a little exciting... but still exciting). We have a fundraising initiative that is super easy! Please check out Fundraising & Events (an option just to the left) to find out how you can contribute to Hopewell Council when you order labels through Mabel's Labels.

 Thank you for your support.

The Purpose of Council:

The purpose of Council is to improve student achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents. Council’s primary means of achieving its purpose is by making recommendations to the principal of the school and the School Board. The objectives of Council are:

  • To develop a strong relationship between home, school, and the wider community served by the school, and to enhance educational opportunities for all students within the school;

  • To seek views and opinions of the school community on the operation of the school and the programs and services provided; To provide advice to the principal and, as appropriate, to the Board and/or its senior staff, on the development and implementation of policies, programs, and services affecting the school;

  • To be an effective voice for promoting the interests of the school, and to actively support the school in meeting the educational, social, and recreational needs of students.

  • To organize various initiatives throughout the year to raise funds that will help the school enhance learning (i.e. books, iPads, Speaker Series for parents etc.) and maintain and improve our yards.

School Council is a fantastic way to connect with the school community. Being an active member opens the door to countless opportunities and enrichment for our children. School Council is always seeking more parents, new ideas and volunteers to keep our great programs and commitments alive.

Everyone is welcome at any time of year to attend council meetings, which are every second Tuesday of most months at 7pm in the library. Schedule found here. We’d love to see you there!
